I’ve heard, and even used, the term “self taught” when it comes to various fields of endeavor. However, the reality is that even though I’m the one pushing the shutter button and making every decision in the editing process I didn’t learn it all on my own. Not even close. I’ve had help every step of the way. Maybe not leaning over my shoulder help, but I’ve been guided by those who came before, and those around me.
Whether is was seeing an image and trying to duplicate its style myself or coming up with something original and then seeking validation of its worth from others, I’ve had help. Then, there’s the help of loved ones who’ve never handled anything close to the equipment I use and have no idea of my vision, but encourage me to stick with it until I alone am pleased with the results. From these people I’ve perhaps learned the most.
I have no particular field that keeps my work centered. Instead I pursue a subject until I feel that I’ve come away with enough images that bring me back to that moment in time whenever I view one of the photos.
When it comes to people I prefer a candid approach that views the person in a way that they may not normally imagine themselves. With architecture I prefer to be a step ahead of the wrecking ball rather than at the ribbon cutting ceremony. When I travel I’m more likely to search out a location from a song or book and try to capture what it was that inspired someone in another medium to immortalize it. I never pass up a chance to photograph religious icons in various settings. The importance that religion places on the cross and the crucifixion never fails to captivate or inspire me. If this concept offends please bypass the portfolio titled “Salvation” and we’ll get along just fine.
Whether it is tagged as such all photos on this site are available for sale. Feel free to contact me with any inquiries and we’ll take it from there.
